The Green Energy Corridors Project is financed by the World Bank under project ID P179797, with a commitment amount of US$300 million, approved by the World Bank Board on 29 March 2024 and scheduled to close on 30 June 2030. The borrower is the Republic of Mozambique and the implementing agencies are Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) and the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy (MIREME). The project's objective is to strengthen the electricity network and increase regional power trade.
The project has three components. The first strengthens transmission infrastructure and finances the construction of a new 400 kV transmission line between Songo and Matambo via Cataxa, together with upgrades at the existing Songo and Matambo substations. The second enables renewable energy at scale through a coordinated national programme for competitive procurement and de-risking finance. The third improves sector governance to increase private sector participation and expand Mozambique's role in the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) region.
This procurement falls under the transmission infrastructure component. The notice states that the Government of Mozambique has received financing from the World Bank towards the cost of the Green Energy Corridors Project and intends to apply part of the proceeds towards payments under this contract, which covers the 400 kV overhead transmission line from Songo substation to Matambo substation over a period of 30 months.
