02Project Background
The Accelerating Sustainable and Clean Energy Access Transformation in Eswatini project (ASCENT Eswatini) is supported by World Bank Loan No. 7700-SZ and implemented by the Eswatini Electricity Company (EEC). The World Bank project number is P508960; the project was approved in February 2025 with a planned closing date of December 2030.
The project finances medium-voltage (MV) works up to 132 kV and low-voltage (LV) works to reinforce the electricity network, including construction of new 132 kV and 66 kV lines and associated substations, construction of LV distribution networks, upgrade of existing 66 kV lines and substations, installation of remotely controlled protection equipment (auto-reclosers), installation of transformers, enhancements to protection, metering and system operation and control, and installation of fibre optic cables. The project also finances the connection of unelectrified households and public facilities in peri-urban and targeted rural areas to the grid.
The 11 kV auto reclosers procured under this contract are deployed in key network segments to automatically reclose rapidly after faults, shortening outage duration and improving distribution reliability. The contract forms a specific procurement for the remotely controlled protection equipment installation component of the project.
