02Project Background

Fisheries and the downstream cold chain in the Republic of Yemen depend on a stable electricity supply. Public information from the FAO Representation in Yemen records that Yemen became an FAO member in 1990 and that an FAO representation office opened in Sanaa in 1985; cooperation has long focused on enhancing agricultural production, promoting rural development and providing normative support. Since the conflict that began in Yemen in 2015, FAO's activities have focused on strengthening the livelihoods of farmers, livestock breeders and fishermen. Flake ice plants sit within the fish preservation chain, and the energy used for their production directly affects fish quality and the livelihoods of fishing communities.
