02Project Background

Sao Tome and Principe is an island state in the Gulf of Guinea whose power system is small and operates as an isolated grid, with generation long dominated by fuel-fired units, resulting in high supply costs and constrained reliability. Where the grid is limited in scale and load is dispersed, renewable energy and minigrids form a workable route for the country to widen electricity access and reduce generation costs.

The renewable energy and minigrid work that UNDP is advancing in the country requires professional support with project engineering design and implementation management capability. The World Bank notes on its energy topic page that a large number of people worldwide still lack access to electricity, the great majority of them in Sub-Saharan Africa, and that expanding renewable energy and minigrid deployment is one of the principal routes to wider access in the region. This procurement is the international project engineer position supporting that work.
