This procurement equips the I-Hub (innovation centre) in Wau, capital of Western Bahr el Ghazal State in South Sudan, with a solar power supply system, forming part of the supporting infrastructure of UNDP's early recovery action in Wau. UNDP Funding Windows provide integrated support to the Wau action, allowing recovery work to adapt as conditions change. In UNDP's account, investing earlier in recovery allows communities to stabilise and opportunities to emerge.
South Sudan has long suffered from insufficient electricity supply, with national access levels among the lowest in the world. The World Bank notes that about 655 million people worldwide lack access to electricity, around nine in ten of whom live in Sub-Saharan Africa, where about half the population has no access to power. Where grid extension cannot advance quickly, off-grid solar supply offers a practical route to support essential public services and local economic activity, and is one of the access pathways supported by the Mission 300 programme advanced jointly by the World Bank and the African Development Bank.
