The beneficiary facility is the John F. Kennedy Medical Center, Liberia's largest referral hospital, which handles critical and specialised care nationally. UNDP Liberia maintains long-standing cooperation with the hospital; in February 2026 the two sides held working discussions on deepening cooperation in the health system, with the UNDP delegation touring clinical and support departments and confirming continued support for digitalisation and infrastructure improvements at the hospital. This procurement equips the hospital's DNA center with a solar PV system to secure power supply for testing equipment.
Liberia has limited electricity supply capacity, and healthcare facilities have long relied on unstable grid power and diesel generation. The World Bank notes that about 655 million people worldwide lack access to electricity, around nine in ten of whom live in Sub-Saharan Africa, where about half the population has no access to power. Where supply is unreliable, installing independent power at facilities carrying out testing and diagnostic functions is an established way to maintain service continuity. The Mission 300 programme advanced jointly by the World Bank and the African Development Bank targets electricity access for an additional 300 million people in Africa by 2030.
