The proposed 100 MW wind farm located north of Letlhakane, Botswana
02Project Background
Botswana plans to harness its renewable energy resources and accelerate renewable energy development through the implementation of its Integrated Resource Plan (IRP). The Government is developing renewable energy projects at several pre-selected sites, and the Projects and Energy Development Unit (PEDU) of the Ministry of Minerals and Energy is responsible for developing these projects.
At the feasibility stage, a consultant identified the proposed wind farm site through a multi-criteria assessment covering preliminary wind resource data, transmission infrastructure, land use and ownership, and preliminary environmental and social considerations. This procurement supports the pre-development of the proposed 100 MW wind farm located north of Letlhakane.
The development objective of the World Bank's Botswana Renewable Energy Scale Up Support project (P178822) is to enable renewable energy development in Botswana. The project was approved on 28 June 2023 and is scheduled to close on 30 June 2027; its implementing agencies are the Ministry of Minerals and Energy and the Ministry of Finance.
